Botanical Gardens Of Villa Taranto
FROM THE SECOND WEEK OF APRIL TO THE END OF THE MONTH
Especially in this period, you will become eyewitness of an impressing and sparkling firework of colours with 80.000 bulbs in flower. Among these, the unquestioned star is the tulip. Spectacular is the TULIPS MAZE, where almost 20.000 bulbs are planted, making part of over 65 varieties. Relating to colours and forms, among these stand out the coveted black tulip QUEEN OF NIGHT and the imposing BIG CHIEF, the corolla of which reaches a diameter of almost 10 centimetres. This charming flower was introduced in Europe in the middle of 1500 (its name of Greek etymology means turban) and it was object of a real passion called ‘tulip mania’.
VICTORIA CRUZIANA in flower
FROM 20th JUNE UNTIL THE END OF OCTOBER
It is the queen of water plants and it is native to the areas of the big river basins of South America (Amazon, Paranà). Starting from 1956 it has found its natural habitat inside the hothouse of the Botanical Gardens of Villa Taranto, where during the periods of greater vegetative activity, (June and July), the leaves can reach a diameter of almost two meter. Their striking flowers open up in the late afternoon with white pineapple scented petals and they close on the morning of the second day, to open up again towards the evening, this time in a pink version, that turns deep red during the night, while the pollination stage takes place. On the subsequent morning, they wither and plunge into the water letting the fruits ripen.
LAST DECADE OF JULY UNTIL THE END OF OCTOBER
From summer till autumn, the DAHLIA MAZE charms and enchants its visitors with the view of over 1700 plants in flower, subdivided in over 350 varieties, that create a play of colours, dimensions and forms, which is not comparable with any other floral essence. Among these jut out the DECORATIVES with big flowers, and particularly the impressive EMORY PAUL; the inflorescences of which exceed 25 centimetres of diameter; the POMPONS, among which we would like to mention the LITTLE WILLIAM; its globe-shaped flower heads, similar to a bees’ nest, sometimes do not even reach 5 mm of diameter
WE REMIND YOU THAT THE FLOWERINGS INSIDE THE PARC ARE SUBJECT TO WEATHER CONDITIONS
