Lago Maggiore as a destination expresses its mission by participating in the event in a “green” way: choosing sustainable procedures beginning with the stand’s concept.
From November 27th to the 29th the conference destination Lago Maggiore Meeting Industry takes part, for the fourth consecutive year, in Barcelona’s EIBTM, the most important worldwide appointment for meetings and events: three days of targeted contacts in a dynamic and professional working environment for all of the MICE sector business.
Lago Maggiore Meeting Industry presents its conference offer to the industry professionals – 394 hotels with 7,926 rooms and 517 meeting rooms for a total of 50,310 seats – including the facilities and services of: Lago Maggiore Conference, Varese Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Convention Bureau and Lago Maggiore Tourism Board of Locarno. At the same time emphasis is given to outdoor Team Building activities: the “Top 10 activities” are ten experiences – including skiing, golfing, rock climbing, biking and canyoning – offered by the destination. Lago Maggiore Green Meeting is also a participant in this combined promotion, financed by the Cooperazione Transfrontaliera Italia-Svizzera 2007 – 2013 Program and realized by the Chambers of Commerce of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Novara and Varese, along with Professional Associations, ATL and the Province. The project’s goal is to compose a network of operators who, by adapting to a code of conduct based on the most successful international experiences, can guarantee customers a final event firmly rooted in environmental sustainability.
One of the first Lago Maggiore Green Meeting activities was an educational tour organized last October in which 15 European operators participated. During this event they had the chance to live a few “Green Experiences” such as: the Zero Kilometer Breakfast served in the hotel during their three-day stay, a tasting of local products, making short trips by bike instead of bus, and a snack-buffet of fruits and vegetables that completely avoided packaging waste.
Visitors at EIBTM will immediately notice that Lago Maggiore Meeting Industry and Lago Maggiore Green Meeting are certified participants in the“20 Sustainable Actions” initiative: their presence at this event conforms to at least nine out of the twenty sustainability rules proposed by EIBTM. Indeed, EIBTM supports several programs and activities connected to sustainability in order to inform and involve its stakeholders, including the Sustainable Stand Award and a three-day educational project featuring experts in the field. Reed Exhibitions, the EIBTM organizer, has pursued this policy since 2005 and, over the last two years, has reduced the waste produced by the event – from 187 to 46 tons – thus becoming a case study for the British Standards Institute, which promotes sustainable events through the British Standard for Sustainable Events (BS8901). Its goal is continual improvements in the processes in order to become ever more sustainable by reducing water and energy consumption, emissions, waste and transport use. Meanwhile they are monitoring and measuring the economic benefits EIBTM brings to the economy and to local enterprises and also working with local charities that are able to create a positive impact on the Barcelona community.
Thanks to this year’s successes with its international projects and those for 2013, the Lago Maggiore destination will be participating in IMEX, BTC and EIBTM.
